Planned with boldness and imagination, the 10 hospitals that made up the United Mine Workers of America's Miners Memorial Hospital Association (MMHA) were a striking innovation and introduced new services to the Central Appalachian coalfields in the mid-1950s. The system soon became a model for similar healthcare organizations across the country. The MMHA system was such a rarity, that one publication described the newly opened hospital locations as "the 10 places where hospital and medical care history will be written." Today, the health system, now known as Appalachian Regional Healthcare, continues its mission in the mountains by offering residents of Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia a local option for the most state-of-the-art technology and advanced quality healthcare services.
From the day we first opened our doors five decades ago, Appalachian Regional Healthcare has been committed to growing and meeting the needs of our communities.
