Now, more than ever, sophisticated technology is opening new doors in the detection, prevention, and treatment of disease. Appalachian Regional Healthcare has built a new 6,000 square foot state of the art reference laboratory to handle the laboratory needs of its hospitals and communities. The Reference Laboratory now located in Hazard will perform a broad spectrum of clinical laboratory analyses in the disciplines of:
- Microbiology involves the examination of microorganisms that cause disease.
- Bacteriology
- Parasitology
- Mycology
- Mycobacteriology
- Virology
- Hematology includes the evaluation of blood cells.
- Coagulation is the study of the blood clot formation.
- Urinalysis involves the chemical and microscopic analysis of urine for diagnostic purposes.
- Special Chemistry analyzes blood and body fluids for components to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of your condition.
- Toxicology is the study of the chemistry, effects, and treatment of toxic substances.
- Emit is a toxicology screening procedure.
- Thin Layer Chromatography is a toxicology screening procedure.
- GC-MS is a toxicology confirming procedure.
- Electrophoresis is the study and separation of ionic molecules.
- Nephelometry is a method for estimating the concentration of cells or particles in a suspension.
- Serology is a technology that detects the presence of antibodies to a particular antigen (for example rheumatoid factor, or HIV test).
- Immunology deals with the study of antigens and the immune process and how we fight off disease.
- Laboratory Outreach is available for participating staff physicians and local employers.
