The Speech-Language Pathology Department at Hazard ARH Regional Medical Center offers a full range of speech, language, and swallowing services for people of all ages. The goal of the Speech-Language Pathology Department is to provide services, including prevention, identification, diagnosis, consultation, cognitive, and/or swallowing disorders. Specialized services include:
- SPEECH
- Articulation/Oral Motor Disorders - a disorder characterized by the incorrect production of speech sounds, syllables, and/or words; a disorder characterized by weak or uncoordinated muscle movements, which generally coincide with articulation, and feeding disorders.
- LANGUAGE
- Childhood Language Disorder - a disorder with the ability to understand or express oneself, which frequently interferes with a child's ability to perform academically (i.e., reading or writing); these patients may also have diagnoses of autism and/or down syndrome which may require augmentative/alternative devices to assist them with communicating with their family and friends.
- Aphasia - an impairment of the ability to use or comprehend words, usually acquired as a result of a stroke or other brain injury.
- Cognitive Disorders - disorders, which are associated with perceiving, remembering, and reasoning.
- VOICE
- Voice Disorders- disorders which may include vocal nodules, paralysis, or swelling (all diagnosed by a physician).
- Laryngectomy - surgical removal of the larynx due to disease process.
- Tracheostomy - surgical placement of a trachea tube to assist patients with upper airway breathing.
- FLUENCY
- Stuttering - a disorder where the flow of speech is interrupted by repetitions, prolongations, broken words, and/or pauses.
- SWALLOWING
- Swallowing Problems (Dysphagia) - problems with either the oral (mouth) or pharyngeal (throat) stage where patients may have difficulty chewing or may demonstrate coughing or throat clearing when they eat or drink.
