Morgan County at a glance…
Welcome to the mountains, and to the friendly community of West
Liberty, Kentucky. West Liberty is located in the central west foothills
of the historic Appalachian Mountains. The community offers the appeal of
small-town living, but is easily accessible to urban areas. We are 90
miles east of Lexington, Kentucky, 30 miles south of Morehead, Kentucky
and 69 miles southwest of Ashland, Kentucky.
Population
West Liberty has 3,200 residents. Morgan County has approximately
13,000 residents.
Industry
Due to its location between the bluegrass and the mountains, farming
is the significant employer in the area. Other significant employers
include Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex, Mountain Telephone,
Licking Valley Rural Electric Cooperative, Morgan County Public School
System, Lion Apparel, Inc., and CMS
Inc.
Education
Morgan County has five elementary schools, a middle school, a high
school, two vocational-technical schools, and an extension campus
facility of Morehead State University. Morehead State University,
located in neighboring Rowan County, provides courses for an associate,
bachelor, and graduate degrees. Also nearby is Lees Junior College,
which offers opportunities for associate degrees in selected areas, as
well as preparatory classes for bachelor’s degrees at other
institutions.
Recreation
Four nearby state parks are favorite spots for hiking, camping, and
having picnics. Beneath Carter Caves State Resort Park in Olive Hill,
Kentucky, are more than 20 twisting caverns. The park also features
Tygart’s Creek and a nine-hole golf course. Cave Run Lake, located just
10 minutes from West Liberty in the heart of the Daniel Boone National
Forest, is known by locals as "Kentucky’s best-kept secret." Hunting,
fishing, hiking, boating, and camping are available. There are also four
golf course located in Rowan and Morgan counties.
Health Services
Morgan County ARH Hospital, a Critical Access Hospital, is the main provider
of healthcare in the county. Medical facilities in neighboring counties
include Mary Chiles Hospital, St. Claire Medical Center, and the Middle
Kentucky River Medical Center.
