Williamson at a glance…

Welcome to the mountains, and to the friendly community of South Williamson, Kentucky! South Williamson is located in the scenic Appalachian mountains in Eastern Kentucky on the West Virginia border. Located in Pike County, the largest county in the state, we are 96 miles from Huntington, West Virginia; 96 miles from Charleston, West Virginia; and 180 miles from Lexington, Kentucky. South Williamson shares its name with Williamson, West Virginia, located just across the “mighty” Tug River.

Population

Pike County, Kentucky, has a population of approximately 72,000. Mingo County, West Virginia’s population is approximately 33,700. South Williamson’s population is a little more than 1,000, and Williamson has approximately 4,000 residents.

Industry

Nestled in the heart of the “billion dollar coal field,” South Williamson, Kentucky, is located in the center of the Tug Valley, a region that supplies the nation with 11 percent of its energy needs. The area’s main industry is coal mining. In fact, Williamson’s Tug Valley Chamber of Commerce is located in a National Historic Landmark, the old “Coal House” building.

Education

The South Williamson/Williamson area is served by six public schools. Higher education is available at Pikeville College, Southern West Virginia Community College, and the Mingo County Vocational School, all of which are located within minutes of South Williamson. Williamson itself offers training schools for registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and laboratory technician candidates.

Recreation

The area offers numerous opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, white-water rafting, swimming and ATV Trails. The Breaks Interstate Park offers a look at the beautiful “Grand Canyon of the South,” a five-mile river canyon believed to have been formed 250 million years ago. Jenny Wiley State Resort Park includes, among other things, Dewey Lake, a summer musical theater and a golf course. Just a 45 minute drive south from Williamson you'll find the Twisted Gun Golf Course developed on a Mountain top removal site and features 18 of the most beautiful holes around. Twisted Gun was named one of the best golf courses in America under $50.00. Other area attractions include Laurel Lake, Cabwaylingo State Park, and R.D. Bailey Lake.

Health Services

Williamson ARH Hospital is a 163-bed facility located in South Williamson. Williamson Memorial Hospital operates on the West Virginia side of the river. In addition, ARH’s Matewan and Phelps clinics provide a blanket of health services to their respective communities.
