Our Oncology unit, which opened in October 2006, provides chemotherapy and supportive therapies to cancer patients. All types of cancer can be treated in the Infusion Suite in the hospital setting.

Our cancer specialist, Dr. Ibrahim Nakhoul, sees all our patients daily in his office before they receive their treatment. The patient then comes to the Infusion Suite on the Third floor of the hospital. The rooms are set up on an outpatient basis with comfortable chemo chairs. The atmosphere is relaxed with coffee, food and television. The patients have the opportunity to socialize and enjoy their stay.

The chemotherapy nurses received their certification at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. They are also Registered Nurses (RNs).

Chemotherapy medications, blood and iron are infused in the unit. Blood is also drawn and sent to the lab for various tests ordered by the physician. There is a nurse in the room at all times while patients are receiving their chemotherapy.

The time of administration varies depending on the type of cancer and the chemotherapy given. Visits last from 1 to 8 hours. Some patients who require chemotherapy over 24-48 hours can take a pump home with the chemo infusing thru a "Port-a-cath," which is IV access suitable for this procedure.

The Infusion Suite nurses have started a support group which meets once a month in the hospital’s Blue Conference Room. Food is prepared depending on the theme for the month: for example, Italian, Chinese, etc. This is an enjoyable event for everyone and the patient and family support for it has been great.

Dr. Nakhoul is a board certified Oncologist who is very knowledgeable in the treatment of all types of cancer. He is an absolute asset to the cancer patients in this community.
