Physiatrists have practiced Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) for more than 70 years, with the earliest of treatments dating back to World War II when physiatrists were vital in treatment of injured soldiers. In 1947,PM&R was officially recognized as a medical specialty by the Advisory Board of Medical Specialties. Physical medicine and rehabilitation involves the management of injuries and disorders that alter the function and daily activities of the patient. Emphasis is placed on the optimization of function.
Physiatrists direct comprehensive rehabilitation team of professionals That may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, recreational therapists, and others.
To maximize the patient's rehabilitation treatment, physiatrists Collaborate with family practice, internal medicine, orthopedists, neurologists, cardiologists, rheumatologist, and many other physician specialties.
Physiatrists perform diagnostic procedures such as electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS).EMG and NCS detect areas of muscle and nerve damage. Common conditions that are treated by physiatrists include amputation, sports injury, neurological impairments (stroke), musculoskeletal impairments (shoulder, knee, back, joints, tendons, muscles, and carpal tunnel),pediatric impairments, gait/balance, and abnormal muscle tone.
