The Beckley ARH Hospital Behavioral Science Center provides acute mental health services for southeastern West Virginia. Inpatient care is provided for adolescents twelve to eighteen, and adults eighteen and older. As part of the Beckley ARH Hospital service array, the Behavioral Science Center strives to treat the whole person with compassion and professionalism. Our goal is to provide patients the support, treatment, knowledge and encouragement to enable them to develop resources they need to return home to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
Since opening in 1992, the 60-bed Behavioral Science Center continues to develop its services, and is committed to offering an innovative model of mental health treatment. The conditions we most frequently treat are: depression, bipolar disorder, psychotic disorders including schizophrenia, anxiety disorders and other serious psychiatric conditions.
- Comprehensive psychological assessment and stabilization
- Medication evaluation and management
- Individual and group counseling
- Life skills training
- Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) when indicated
Discharge planning and transition to out patient follow up with the patient’s physician, therapists, and other community agencies

Visiting hours are determined by our hospital policy on visitation as well as our treatment schedule. Please consult a staff person for further details regarding visiting hours. Visitors must stop at the desk n in the front lobby at the entrance to the Behavioral Science Center and sign in before going to the cafeteria (A unit patients) or to the lounges on B and Adolescent units. Visitors are not permitted to bring purses, coats or cell phones onto patient units due to safety reasons. Children under the age of 14 are not permitted in unit areas; however, in certain situations, arrangements can be made with treatment team for off unit visits.
The Beckley ARH Behavioral Science Center is affiliated with private psychiatrists and local mental health centers in our service area. Patients may refer themselves to the Behavioral Science Center or they may be referred by physicians, healthcare professionals, family, friends, employers, schools, or community agencies. In emergent situations individuals may go to the Beckley ARH Emergency Department for evaluation.
