Physician's process for obtaining in-house psychiatric evaluations & needs assessments:
There are two options available to a physician for ordering evaluations- a psychiatric assessment and a psychiatric consult.
Assessments can be used to assess a patient's needs, and then refer to appropriate providers. Because assessments are done by ARH unit counselors and nurses, they can be done more quickly than consults.
"Consults" are only performed by a psychiatrist and may take longer. A physician may order either a consult or assessment and the unit will be notified of the order. If the patient is stable and only needs out-patient resources, (vs. a formal psychiatric evaluation), please order the psychiatric assessment rather than a psychiatric consult.
