The Senior Center

Contrary to popular belief, it is not a right of passage or normal for senior citizens to experience depression and anxiety. At least 12% of the elderly population has a diagnosable mental illness, but few are treated due to the common misconception that mental illness is a natural part of the aging process. As growing numbers of Baby Boomers reach retirement age, the need for specialized geriatric psychiatric services is more necessary than ever.

The new Senior Center at Harlan ARH is a specialized medical-psychiatric unit designed to diagnose and treat the acute emotional distress of people 65 years and older. You will find our caring and specially trained staff has one thing in mind - your loved one. This is demonstrated in the services, clinical knowledge and programs provided, as well as the safety features built in to keep your loved one safe.

The Senior Center offers an innovative model of mental health treatment, and is another example of how Harlan ARH continues to develop its services in response to the needs of the communities we proudly serve throughout southeastern Kentucky and western Virginia. The average length of stay for the Senior Center is 1-2 weeks with the ultimate goal of returning your loved one to their previous living situation.
