Vaginal Cancer
Vaginal cancer is a rare type of cancer that starts in the vagina. It accounts for about 1 percent of female genital cancers.
What are the Risk Factors?
Risks factors include:
Exposure to human papillomavirus (HPV)
Smoking
Having a skin condition involving the vulva
Lichen sclerosis, which causes the vulvar skin to become thin and itchy
A weakened immune system (HIV, organ transplant)
A history of precancerous conditions of the vulva
What are the Symptoms?
Other symptoms include:
Watery vaginal discharge.
Painful or frequent urination.
Pelvic pain, especially during sex.
Fistulas.
How can it be Prevented?
Take steps to lower risk of HPV.
Get an HPV Vaccination.
Stop smoking.
Drink in moderation.
Get regular pap smears and pelvic exams.
