Physiatrists (PM&R Physicians) are musculoskeletal experts who treat injuries and illnesses that affect bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, and nerves that determine how you function. Physiatrists direct a comprehensive rehabilitation team of professionals that may include physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech language pathologists, recreational therapists, and others. To maximize the patient’s rehabilitation treatment, physiatrists collaborate with family practice, internal medicine, orthopedists, neurologists, cardiologists, rheumatologist, and many other physician specialties. Physiatrists perform diagnostic procedures such as intradiscal electrothermal therapy, electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS). EMG and NCS detect areas of muscle and nerve damage.
