Low Dose CT

Low Dose CT

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the U.S.A. today.

If you are the age 55-77 and a current or former smoker, you could be at a higher risk. The good news – one simple test could prolong your life and allow your family to enjoy many more celebrations with you.  At Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH), we are trying to reduce the number of lives and family members that this terrible disease destroys. ARH offers preventative measures to the Appalachian area that begin with a simple test that can detect the disease early. When lung cancer is caught before it spreads, treatment can begin sooner, be more effective and significantly improve survival.

One simple test can save your life!

What Is The Test?

The test is called a Low Dose Lung CT Scan. It is a special kind of CT that takes multiple pictures of your chest at one time with a low dose of radiation.

Will The Scan Hurt?

No. During a CT Scan you simply lie on a table as it takes the pictures, the test takes less than 10 minutes.

How Do I Know If I Need A Scan?
  • I’m 55-77 years old.
  • I’m a former smoker who has quit less than 15 years ago.
  • I’m a current smoker with at least a 30 pack year history (# of years smoked x packs per day).
  • Have not had a CT of the Chest in the last 12 months.
  • Asymptomatic (no symptoms such as fever, chest pain, new shortness of breath, new or changing cough, coughing up blood, or unexplained significant weight loss).
Will Insurance Cover A Lung Cancer Screening Test?

The initial scan will be covered without co-pay if:

  • You meet the high-risk criteria,
  • are 55–80 years old and have private insurance,
  • OR are 55–77 years old and have Medicare.

** Health plans, including Medicare and private insurance, may charge co-pays if the facility or provider is “out of network.” When booking your appointment, confirm with the facility that it and the providers are “in network” to avoid cost sharing.
