About Mary Breckinridge ARH Hospital
Mary Breckinridge ARH Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital located in Hyden, Ky. Acquired by Appalachian Regional Healthcare in 2011, the hospital is steeped in tradition and traces its roots back to the early days of the Frontier Nursing Service. FNS midwives, who traveled throughout eastern Kentucky on horseback providing comprehensive medical care, are credited with saving the lives of thousands of newborns throughout the rural mountainous region. Among its offerings are behavioral health, home health and skilled nursing “swing beds,” which provide an opportunity for patients to transition from observation to acute care to extended-stay post-acute care without changing rooms. Skilled nursing through swing bed care typically lasts 7 to 21 days, as the goal is to prepare patients for a return home. Mary Breckinridge ARH serves the residents of Hyden, Clay, Harlan and Perry counties in Kentucky. It operates the Hyden ARH Clinic and the Big Creek ARH Clinic.
