Beckley ARH Hospital welcomes general surgeon Dr. Laurie Hung
BECKLEY, W.Va. – Beckley ARH Hospital recently welcomed general surgeon Dr. Laurie Yew-Kin Hung to its team of providers.
“Dr. Hung is a skilled and energetic surgeon, and we are thrilled for her to join us here at Beckley ARH,” said hospital CEO Todd Howell. “We look forward to watching her career blossom as she helps us in our commitment to serve the people of southern West Virginia.”
Hung, a native of Toronto, Canada, received an undergraduate in health science degree from the University of Waterloo, a Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College, a master of science in biomechanics from the University of Guelph in Ontario, and a medical degree from the Medical University of the Americas in the West Indies. She completed her general surgery residency at Marshfield Medical Center in Wisconsin and served as a colorectal surgery research fellow at the Cleveland Clinic.
She said she was inspired to pursue a career in medicine while working as a chiropractor in her native Canada.
“I was working in a medical clinic and saw the difference family doctors could make with patients,” she said. “The scope of care they could provide was so much more, and I realized I wanted to do that, too.”
Her focus shifted from family practice during a surgical rotation in medical school.
“It’s gratifying to be able to use my hands to fix a problem and to then see immediate results,” she explained.
Hung, who was drawn to both southern West Virginia and to ARH during her interview process, said she is excited for her new opportunity and looks forward to caring for the region’s patients.
“It’s a beautiful area and I’m just very happy to be here, working with a great and supportive team,” she said. “My goal is to provide high-quality care and to perform safe and successful surgeries that will allow the patients the best possible outcomes.”

Hung and her husband Lee reside in Beckley with their two cats, Hiyah and Kapow.
