January 28, 2025 – At just 15 years old, Crystal McGaffee’s journey into healthcare began when she signed up as a volunteer at Highlands Regional Medical Center, now known as Highlands ARH. She recalls the days spent delivering ice, reading to patients, and handing out magazines.
“Even the smallest acts made me feel like I was making a real difference in someone’s life,” said Crystal, who now serves as Community Chief Nursing Officer at Paintsville ARH. “Volunteering allowed me to develop relationships that helped inspire me to continue my education,” she continued.
From there, Crystal’s career unfolded in unexpected ways. At 18, she took a registration position in the emergency room at Highlands, eventually transitioning into roles as a Medical Assistant and, later, as an OR Tech. “Every role I held was impactful and further ignited my passion for healthcare,” she explains. “The nurses were always there to mentor me, encouraging me every step of the way. Their belief in me helped me find my path.”
It was the nurses who truly shaped her career. Inspired by their mentorship and guidance, Crystal enrolled in nursing school as a single mother. “I had an incredible support system at work. The physicians, the nurses—they all took the time to help me grow professionally and personally,” she says.
After completing nursing school, Crystal’s journey took her to Paintsville ARH, where she started as a staff nurse in the OR. She continued to grow throughout the years, moving into leadership roles as Assistant Director, then Director, before her current position as Community Chief Nursing Officer.
Crystal’s story is a testament to the power of volunteering—not just in changing the lives of those we serve, but also in shaping the future of those who choose to give their time.
Angela Bailey, Executive Director of the ARH Foundation, knows firsthand the difference volunteers make. “Volunteers are the heart of our community,” she says. “Volunteers create connections that heal, uplift, and inspire. The ARH Foundation is proud to support our facilities and hospitals through the volunteer program.”
Crystal believes that volunteering can be a life-changing experience for everyone involved. “You don’t have to do something huge to make a difference,” she explains. “Even a few minutes of your time can brighten someone’s day. Volunteers are often the reason someone feels valued and seen, especially in a healthcare setting where human connection is so important.”
Nicole Davis, System Volunteer Director at ARH, adds, “Volunteering isn’t just about helping others, it’s about the transformation that happens within yourself. You have the power to change lives, including your own.”
Crystal’s journey proves that volunteering isn’t just a first step—it’s a springboard to something greater. “I would love to see the volunteer program grow and inspire more people to take that first step towards helping others” she says. “Volunteering changes lives and I know from experience how powerful that can be.”
Crystal’s story is a reminder that the simple act of giving your time can create a ripple effect, changing the lives of those you help—and your own in the process.
