ARH Internal Medicine Residency Program
The primary mission of the ARH Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train Internal Medicine Physicians who are thoroughly versed in the litany of problems faced by the Appalachian population.
NOTE: THE ARH INTERNAL MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM WILL ONLY ACCEPT APPLICATIONS THROUGH ERAS.

We expect to train general Internists that utilize critical thought, innovative methods, and life-long learning to continue improving their mastery of the profession throughout their careers.
We strive to inspire our residents and graduates to be engrained in their communities and committed to improve the overall health of the population through education, engagement and empathetic care.

Program Tenets
- Engage patients to become active participants in their own care with shared decision making.
- Cultivate an environment that empowers the patient and their care unit to positively impact their health status and optimize their quality of life.
- Practice stewardship of resources.
- Understanding and developing ways to provide services most needed that may not be readily available. Fostering opportunities that exist within the community to advance these services.
- Appreciating each patient’s unique circumstances, impediments to realizing their desired quality of life and ways to overcome them.
- Fostering a collegial environment, rich with opportunities to learn across the continuum of providers.
- Showing respect to all members of the care team and most importantly to the patients allowing us to provide care to them in a learning environment.
- Illustrating the utmost respect for the patient encounter and the opportunity to learn from each such encounter.
- The realization that with altruistic goals and great achievement there is a high level of responsibility and hard work to secure attainment.
- Scholarship and commitment to life-long learning.
- Having a biopsychosocial approach to patient care and recognize that social and psychological determinants play large parts in our patient’s health.
