March 03, 2023 – ARH continues to strive to improve health and promote well-being of all people in Central Appalachia in partnership with our communities. Cooking classes, diabetes support groups and free screening events are just some of the steps ARH is taking to fulfill its mission.
On February 23, Tug Valley ARH Regional Medical Center partnered with Pike County’s UK Extension Office for a Heart Health Cooking Demonstration Class. Six participants watched as Valerie Robinette, Senior EFNEP Assistant for the Pike County Extension Office, prepared a delicious Quick Tuscan Soup and Seasonal Fruit Crisp.
Paintsville ARH Hospital partnered with the UK Extension Office to offer a Heart Health Cooking Demonstration in Johnson County on February 28. Brenda Cockerham, Johnson County’s Family and Consumer Science Extension Agent, taught 25 attendees how to cook a delicious chicken stir fry and blueberry muffin dessert.
At both events, each participant received a gift basket with information on healthy nutrition, recipes for the meals demonstrated, kitchen prep items, and a $20 Food City Gift Card to purchase the items needed to prepare the meal demonstrated.
“We hope to have more cooking classes like this in the future. It’s a fun way to learn to make delicious meals that are heart healthy so we can better care for ourselves and those we love,” comments Layken Chapman, ARH Regional Community Development Manager.
